“When you look at my artwork, I want you to keep looking, to keep searching, to see something different at each viewing.”
When the Rozelle Tram Depot closed its doors in 1958 the site lay abandoned and unloved. The 6 historic trams, 2 buses and massive wall expanses that remained behind closed doors were soon, however, an attraction for local artists to express their artistic prowess.
Year after year, spray after spray, layer upon layer of ever evolving cultural history continued to grace the space. Every wall, every nook and cranny, every bus and every tram would tell a picture. Each layer having been created with innocent intent, living an artists dream of fame, only to be “sprayed away” with another layer of love.
The Tramsheds doors reopened in September 2016, and some of the artworks remain intact on walls. One tram was lovingly restored to its former glory and returned to pride of place in the re-purposed Tramsheds precinct.
However, those enchanted moments are now lost to memory both by the artistic creators themselves and by those fortunate enough to have caught a magical glimpse.
History loved by many, history never to be repeated.
